NBA ROLE: OFFENSIVE-MINDED PIVOT

 

Marcin Gortat (aka the ‘Polish Hammer’) is like a rock – Gortat does (just about) everything well, including securing boards, defending his position & knocking down shots; good scorer – hitting open Js, to about 18 feet, is a cinch (can he expand to three-point land?), as well as finishing soft hooks using either hand (actually, Gortat is probably better using his left – he lofts it after a couple fakes & it’s usually cash); not a great rim protector, defensive worth (primarily) comes from taking charges/sacrificing body; sets strong screens, helps create lanes for ball-handlers; good for around 10 & 8 every night; traded to LAC (Summer '18) – veteran scorer/rotational big for Doc Rivers

Arron Afflalo: veteran wing who can defend & knock down jumpers; role player but has seen a lot of big-time opportunities: normally ready to contribute; pull-up, ‘pseudo-gooseneck  J’ guy – very good midrange shooter – owns elbow zones, crossover attacker who rises up mid-dribble; ever-so-slight hitch in his J but Arron can get hot nonetheless; loves posting up – not the biggest or strongest guard but gets into a nice, low stance and releases turnaround Js w/ ease; two key questions for the immediate future: can Afflalo play a role on a contender? … is his defense on a rapid decline?; bit of a journeyman – bounced around in recent years

A true UnderDOG, (utility guard) Shelvin Mack is always ready when called upon; whether Mack plays 30 minutes, 15 minutes or not at all, he doesn’t rock the boat – comes in, makes a few shots + correct basketball plays; capable ball-handler & scorer: loves outside jumpers but mixes in probing floaters & midrange Js when curling hard off a catch; very good distributor for a “shoot-first” combo guard – freezes defenders after nasty in & out hezzies, drops delightful dimes; one of Charlotte''s key vets off the bench
